Joe Liu has been the concert master of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra (for its 2004 and 2005 seasons), and a member of the Ruth Montgomery Fellowship String Quartet (founded by the Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society). He is currently the concert master of the University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Joe studied with Huei-Sheng Kao for over seven years, and plays on a 1923-violin made y Pietro Messori, with a bow made by Marcel Fetique.
