Before attaining a Ph.D. in Composition and Theory from the the University of Pittsburgh, Burkhardt Reiter received a Bachelor's in Music from the Eastman School of Music in euphonium and a Master's degree in Composition and Theory from Duquesne University. His composition teachers include Mathew Rosenblum, Eric Moe, Anne LeBaron, David Stock, and Christopher Rouse among others.

Burkhardt is an active composer of chamber, symphonic, and electro-acoustic music which is becoming known for a sophisticated style of exceptional clarity that speaks to a wide audience.

As alia musica's 2007–8 Composer in Residence, Mr. Reiter wrote re- for the ensemble, that premiered it on October 18th., 2007. His Music for 159 keys was performed in the Winter 2008 Chamber Concert.
